The staff of the department daily provide medical advice on the basis of 10 clinics and surrounding polyclinics, perform the most complex and high-tech operations on the organs of the chest and abdominal cavities, vessels, organs of the retroperitoneal space.
Every year, the staff of the department performs about 1500 operations, consults more than 2500 patients.
The staff of the department carry out elective and emergency trips to the regions of the Republic, rounds of patients in surgical departments, examine critically ill patients in departments according to directions from clinics, regions and districts of the republic.
The republican center of pancreatology, the city center “Diabetic foot”, the city center of thoracic surgery operate on the basis of the university clinic. The most severe patients from hospitals in Minsk and other regions of the Republic of Belarus are transferred to the clinic.
The department conducts research on the development of modern principles for the treatment of peritonitis; for the surgical treatment of diabetes mellitus and its complications; for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatitis, gastroduodenal bleeding, diseases and injuries of the chest organs; on the development and methods of increasing the reliability of intestinal anastomoses.
The clinic is researching methods to improve the surgical treatment of open and closed chest trauma. The clinic optimizes the methods of laparoscopic and videothoracoscopic operations for diseases and injuries of the abdominal and thoracic cavity organs.
The technique of retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy for recurrent adrenal neoplasms and the technique of laparoscopic hepaticojejunostomy according to Roux for intraoperative lesions of the extrahepatic bile ducts have been introduced into clinical practice.
Modern methods of treatment of intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, treatment of gastroduodenal bleeding, pancreatitis, chest trauma have been introduced into clinical practice.
The methods of laparoscopic choledochoduodenostomy in the treatment of patients with choledocholithiasis and stenosing diseases of the terminal section of the common bile duct, laparoscopic fundoplication in the treatment of hiatus hernias and reflux esophagitis, surgical treatment of benign tumors, treatment of pancreatic varices have been introduced into the clinical practice of surgical departments.
Modern video-assisted surgical interventions on the thyroid gland, laparoscopic posterior cruraraphy, Nissen esophagofundoplication, removal of esophageal leiomyoma have been introduced into clinical practice.
Methods of diagnosis and treatment of patients with surgical complications of diabetes mellitus in the city center “Diabetic Foot” are constantly being improved.
Vascular surgery and X-ray endovascular interventions on the arteries of the lower extremities in patients with diabetic foot syndrome and critical threatening limb ischemia have been introduced into clinical practice.
