The 1st Department of Surgical Diseases (formerly the Department of Faculty Surgery) was founded in 1924 on the basis of the surgical departments of the 3rd clinical hospital in Minsk. The first head of the department was professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Rubashov S.M. (1924-1934).
The department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Korchits E.V. from 1934 to 1941.
From 1944 to 1960 the department functioned on the basis of the 2nd clinical hospital in Minsk. Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Petrov N.T. headed the department until 1953.
The department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Plisan O.G. from 1953 to 1955, from 1955 to 1965 - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Maslov P.N.
From 1960 to 1986 the base of the department was the 4th clinical hospital in Minsk. The department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Shott A.V. from 1965 to 1992.
In 1985 the Department of Faculty Surgery was renamed into the 1st Department of Surgical Diseases. Since 1986 the base of the department is the 10th clinical hospital in Minsk. From 1992 to 2004 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Leonovich S.I.
Since 2004 the department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Kondratenko G.G.
A number of employees of the department have honorary titles:
Professor Shott A.V. have been Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus, laureate of the State Prize of the BSSR, awarded the Orders of the October Revolution, the Labor Red Banner and Honor, Certificates of Merit from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. Shott A.V. have been the author of 280 scientific works (including 10 monographs), the author of the tutorial 'Course of lectures on private surgery', There are 12 copyright certificates for invention. 14 Doctor of Medical Sciences and 40 Candidate of Medical Sciences were trained by him. He have been member of the Board of the Belarusian Association of Surgeons.
Professor Leonovich S.I. have been an Honored Doctor of the Republic of Belarus, awarded the Order of Honor, certificates of honor of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. More than 300 publications (including 10 monographs, 2 tutorials on surgery) have been published. 2 Doctor of Medical Sciences and 10 Candidate of Medical Sciences were trained by him. He have been chairman of the Belarusian Association of Surgeons, member of the Board of the International Association of Surgeons named Pirogov N.I., Academician of the International Academy of Sciences of Ecology and Life Safety, Academician of the International Academy of Organizational and Management Sciences. He headed of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center 'Surgical Pancreatology'.
