Research work of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is uniquely positioned to harness the expertise of clinicians across the medical facilities and advance the Belarusian State Medical University’s overall research mission.

Under the guidance of the head of the Department, Professor L. F. Mozheiko, the staff of the department carries out scientific research within the framework of state scientific programs and projects, fundamental research on topical problems of obstetrics and gynecology, which are actively introduced into the practical health care of the Republic.

Gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, pediatric gynecology, reproductive medicine, contraception, and prenatal diagnosis are all areas of active clinical research. Our faculty members and scientists have a long history of conducting innovative research which is currently employed in standard clinical practice.

  • Pregnancy and childbirth management in women with antiphospholipid syndrome (E.V. Tereshko)
  • Childhood pregnancy, the peculiarities of the course of pregnancy and childbirth, the state of newborns in young primiparous women (E. G. Karpova)
  • Robotic technologies in hysterectomy for benign uterine tumors (A.I. Kazakevich)
  • Scientifically grounded program for the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent abnormal uterine bleeding on the basis of a comprehensive study of the hemostasis system, endocrine and immune statuses (I.A.Guzei).

For the period 2015-2019 under the leadership of the Professor Mozheiko the following thesis had been defended:

  1. Lapotko M.L. Doctoral thesis “Chronic pelvic pain: diagnosis, treatment, prevention”
  2. Guzei I.A. PhD thesis “Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of recurrent uterine bleeding in adolescents.”
  3. Pribushenya O.V. Doctoral thesis “Multifetal pregnancy: prenatal diagnosis, invasive technologies, medical genetic counseling and management.”

During the period of the department's activity, 98 candidate and 11 doctoral thesis have been defended, 2297 scientific articles, 43 monographs, 35 collections of scientific papers and reference books, 83 teaching aids and textbooks, 67 inventions and rationalization proposals have been published.

Currently, the staff of the department is carrying out research work on the topic: “Evidence-based medicine in the obstetric and gynecological care improvement”, the results of which are reflected in numerous publications, collections of scientific papers, in reports of International forums, republican congresses, scientific and practical conferences, candidate and doctoral dissertations, inventions, patents, rationalization proposals. In addition, the staff of the department is actively carrying out fundamental and applied scientific research, international clinical projects, including clinical trials of drugs, within the framework of state scientific programs.

In the Republic of Belarus, a service for pediatric and adolescent gynecology has been created, a comprehensive system of measures has been developed and implemented to organize the provision of medical and preventive care to adolescent girls at the outpatient and inpatient stages, the periods of the formation of the reproductive system in adolescents have been scientifically substantiated, individual methods of correction of existing disorders have been proposed (L. F. Mozheiko).

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the leading institution for the implementation of government programs and activities: the annual Scientific Forum “Innovative technologies in Obstetrics and Gynecology”, international congresses, conferences and seminars on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases, endoscopic surgery in gynecology, as well as other topical issues of obstetrics, gynecology and fetal medicine.

For the period from 2015 to 2020, with the participation of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, conferences with international participation were organized and held:

The Belarusian Scientific and Practical Public Association “Association of Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Neonatologists” (chairman of the department head professor L.F.) regularly holds meetings on topical issues of obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology, international and republican webinars and teleconferences at the department.

In addition, leading researchers of the scientific and pedagogical obstetric and gynecological school carry out international cooperation with the Russian Association of Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Neonatologists, the Russian Association for Endometriosis and Menopause, the Russian Association of Pediatric and Adolescent Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the European Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the European Association for Gynecology endocrinology, European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy.

In addition, leading researchers of the scientific and pedagogical obstetric and gynecological school carry out international cooperation with the Russian Association of Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Neonatologists, the Russian Association for Endometriosis and Menopause, the Russian Association of Pediatric and Adolescent Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the European Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the European Association for Gynecology endocrinology, European Association of Endoscopic Gynecologists.

Since 2008, the international scientific and practical journal “Reproductive Health Eastern Europe” (https://rz.recipe.by/ru/) has been published, recognized by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine. The journal is included in the international scientific databases EBSCO, Ulrich, in the electronic library eLIBRARY.RU, in the EastView database of the IPRbooks system. Active international cooperation is carried out with the Russian, Ukrainian, European associations of obstetricians and gynecologists.

In order to assist with students’ research, our faculty members help with study design and analysis. Students are able to perform clinical research and publish their work in journals within our field.
