History of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Belarusian State Medical University was founded in September 1923. The founder of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and its permanent leader for 27 years was the Honored Scientist of the BSSR, Doctor of Medical Science., Professor Maxim Vydrin, representative of the Moscow School of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

On June 1, 1931

The construction of a new 1st City Clinical Hospital has finished and since then and for more than 90 years the obstetric and gynecological department of the 1st City Clinical Hospital has been the main clinical base of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Belarusian State Medical University

1931-1941

The constant increase in the number of students, teaching staff, postgraduate studies required the addition of the 3rd floor of the main building and the opening of an additional clinical base of the department, which was organized in the 3rd City Clinical Hospital with the allocation of a course in gynecology. Professor Evgeny Klumov was in charge of this clinical base.

Before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, 2 professors, 4 associate professors and 7 assistants worked at the department. Outstanding specialists Ivan Legenchenko and Lev Kantorovich made a significant contribution to the development of the obstetric and gynecological service of the Republic.

1941-1944

With the beginning of the Second World War, the institute and the department were forced to suspend their activities. During the war, under the leadership of Professor Vydrin, departments of obstetrics and gynecology were organized in the Kyrgyz and Yaroslavl Medical Institutes, where some of the employees worked until they returned to Minsk.

1944-1951

After the liberation of Minsk, classes at all courses of the medical institute were resumed on November 1, 1944. In extremely difficult conditions, often without electric lighting and water, with constant work on the restoration of the building, it was necessary to train students and provide medical care to the female population of Minsk and the Republic. In the 50s, the activity of the department was completely normalized.

1951-1958

From 1951 to 1958, the department was headed by Leonid Persianinov, Honored Scientist of the BSSR, Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Vice-President of the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. At the same time, he was the chief obstetrician-gynecologist of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR and Chairman of the Scientific Medical Council of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR.

A talented scientist, an excellent organizer and public figure, a brilliant surgeon, a highly humane doctor and a person in a short period of time created the Belarusian school of obstetricians and gynecologists, brought up on the best traditions of Soviet healthcare.

1958-1976

In 1958 L.S. Persianinov became the director of the Research Institute of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology in Moscow, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was headed by Honored Scientist of the BSSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Ivan Starovoitov. Professor Starovoitov went through life school from a doctor-resident to the head of the department, heading the board of the Belarusian scientific society of obstetricians-gynecologists, being the deputy chairman of the Academic Council of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR, was a member of the All-Union Society of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, the editorial board of the journals "Obstetrics and Gynecology" and "Healthcare of Belarus" Deputy of the Minsk City Council.

Under the leadership of I.M. Starovoitov, the department staff developed methods for the prevention of septic complications, surgical interventions for inflammatory processes of the pelvic organs, methods of preventing uterine bleeding, miscarriage, methods of conservative treatment of fibroids uterus, early diagnosis of precancerous and malignant neoplasms, methods of conducting pathological childbirth, perinatal protection of the fetus, the medical and social aspects of abortion were studied.

1976-1997

In 1976 I.M. Starovoitov handed over the leadership of the department to Professor Georgy Gerasimovich, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the BSSR, Full Academician of BelAMN, Chairman of the Republican Scientific Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, member of the problem committee, editorial board of the journal "Health", member of the expert council of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Belarus, author of more than 400 scientific articles, 8 monographs , the reference book of the doctor of the antenatal clinic and the textbook "Obstetrics".

Professor Gerasimovich is a talented doctor, a remarkable scientist and teacher who, together with his students (G.A. Lukashevich, Yu.K. Malevich, O.A. Peresada, L.F. Mozheiko, L.S. S. Verbitsky, A. N. Barsukov, S. N. Tsareva, S. D. Shilova, V. I. Duda, T. A. Smirnova, R. L. Korshikova, A. A. Kuznetsov, N. V. Zavyalova, N.S. Akulich, O.S. Lobachevskaya and others) made a significant contribution to the development of obstetric and gynecological science and practice, to the training and improvement of medical personnel, which contributed to a significant improvement in women's health indicators, a decrease in maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, having created a powerful and authoritative Belarusian school of obstetricians and gynecologists.

1997-2003

From 1997 to 2003 the head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yuri Malevich, a member of the specialized council and the Republican Qualification Commission, Deputy Chairman of the BNPOO "Association of Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Neonatologists", editor-in-chief of the journal "Medical Panorama", author of more than 250 scientific works, including a reference book for a doctor of antenatal clinics, textbooks "Obstetrics" and "Gynecology", 4 monographs.

2003-present

The head of the department from 2003 to the present is carried out by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Lyudmila Mozheiko, a student of G.I. Gerasimovich, under whose leadership the best traditions of the department are continued with dignity.

Head of the Department, Professor L.F. Mozheiko is the head of the Association of Obstetricians, Gynecologists and Neonatologists, BNPOO, and is the editor-in-chief of the international scientific and practical journal Reproductive Health. Eastern Europe ", Chairman of the Council D 03.18.01 for the defense of doctoral and candidate dissertations at the EE" BSMU ", chief consultant of the State Institution" Republican Clinical Medical Center of the Presidential Affairs Administration of the Republic of Belarus ", Chairman and member of the attestation commission for the assignment of qualifying medical categories of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, a member of the scientific council of the university and an expert council on state projects, an expert of the state investigative committee of complex medical examinations, a member of the expert commission of the OMD and medical genetics of the scientific medical council of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, as well as a member of the editorial boards of the journals “Russian Bulletin of Obstetrician-Gynecologist” and “Reproductive Health of Adolescent Girls »RF; "Obstetrics and Gynecology" and "Women's Health" Ukraine; "Medical News", "Protection of Motherhood and Childhood", "Healthcare", "Dermatovenereology and Cosmetology" and "Belarusian Medical Journal".

Under the leadership of the professor L.F. Mozheiko 2 doctoral dissertations (V.N.Sidorenko, O.V. Pribushenya) and 14 candidate dissertations had been successfully defended. Under the leadership of L.F. Mozheiko the department staff developed methods for managing of early gestation periods with fetoplacental insufficiency, differentiated schemes for managing women at risk for the development of postpartum endometritis. The features of the course of pregnancy and childbirth in women with antiphospholipid syndrome were studied with scientific substantiation of modern schemes of pregravid preparation (E.V. Tereshko), as well as medical and social aspects of juvenile pregnancy, the peculiarities of the course of pregnancy and childbirth, the state of newborns in young primiparous women (E. G. Karpova). With the use of modern microinvasive technologies, indications are developed, the robotics of laparoscopic hysterectomy for benign uterine tumors is being improved (A.I. Kazakevich). On the basis of a comprehensive study of the hemostasis system, endocrine and immune statuses, a comprehensive scientifically grounded program for the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent abnormal uterine bleeding was developed and put into practice (I.A.Guzei).

The staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology supports its best traditions, has a powerful scientific and intellectual potential for solving urgent problems of modern obstetrics, perinatology and gynecology.
