The Department of Physics (since 1984 - the Department of Medical and Biological Physics) was first organized in 1921 at the Medical Faculty of the Belarusian State University as one of the first basic departments and in 1984 was renamed into the Department of Medical and Biological Physics, retaining its name during the transformation of the Minsk State Medical Institute into the Belarusian State Medical University in 2001. Today, the Department of Medical and Biological Physics employs 29 persons-24 teachers, 4 laboratory assistants and the head of the educational laboratory.
Efim Eremeevich Sirotin, PhD(Physics), Professor. First Head of the Department of Physics (1922-1927).
Vladimir Nikolaevich Sorochinsky, PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences), Associate Professor. Head of the Department of Physics from 1927 up to 1941 and from 1944 up to 1945.
Fyodor Konstantinovich Gorsky, PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences), Associate Professor. Head of the Department of Physics from 1945 up to 1976.
Henrikh Kazimirovich Ilyich, PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences), Associate Professor. Head of the Department of Physics (Medical and Biological Physics) from 1976 up to 2004.
Vyacheslav Grigoryevich Leschenko, PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences), Associate Professor. Head of the Department of Medical and Biological Physics from 2004 up to 2016.
Mikhail Vsevolodovich Goltsev, PhD (Physical and Mathematical Sciences), Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Medical and Biological Physics since 2016.
Medical and Biological physics is a hybrid science involving application of physical principles and methods to study and explain the structure of living organisms and the mechanics of life processes in its variety and complexity.
Medical students receive the necessary knowledge about the physical characteristics and properties of biological tissues, about the physical methods of research and impact on the human body used in modern medicine : about the methods of obtaining 2D and 3D images of organs and tissues; on the principles of registration of the main electrograms, on modern methods for determining the rheological characteristics of blood flow, on the use of lasers in therapy, surgery, ophthalmology and microsurgery, in oncology; on the photodynamic therapy etc.
The aim of the course in Medical and Biological physics is to familiarize students with:
- biophysical fundamentals of the construction and operation of the basic cellular structures, some tissues and organs and the body as a whole
- physical phenomena occurring in the human body
- mechanisms and effects of physical factors on the human body
- physical fundamentals of modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
The Department of Medical and Biological Physics conducts training in the following disciplines:
- «Medical and Biological Physics» for students of all faculties (except the pharmaceutical faculty)
- «Biological physics» for students of the pharmaceutical faculty
- «Informatics in medicine» and «Medical informatics»
- Safety of human life (section «Basics of energy saving»)
- «Physics», «Mathematics» and «Introduction to medical physics» for students of the preparatory department
- «Fundamentals of Information Technologies» for PhD students, graduate students and applicants
