The beginning of the development of dental care was laid in 1919, after the formation of the BSSR and the approval by the People's Commissariat of Health of the dental section, which was engaged in the organization of state dental offices and dental laboratories.
October 30, 1921 - as part of the Belarusian State University, the first medical faculty in the republic was organized, on the basis of which the department of dentistry was created in 1926, headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor I.D.Sokolovsky, from 1927 to 1930. - Associate Professor Starobinsky I.M., since 1930 - Associate Professor Metlitsky Yu.K.
In 1960. By order of the Minister of Higher Education of the USSR, a dental faculty was opened on the basis of the Moscow State Medical Institute. The enrollment of students was carried out in the amount of 100 people, of which 50 - for the inpatient department, created on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine, headed by Associate Professor of the Department of Tuberculosis N.G. Bely, and 50 - for correspondence courses, which were led by the assistant of the Department of Surgical Dentistry Ivus E M.
In 1964, on the basis of the dental department of the 3rd city clinical hospital in Minsk, the Department of Surgical Dentistry was organized, which was headed and led by it until 1979 by Honored Doctor of the BSSR, Ph.D., Associate Professor T.V. Fokina.
In the same period, the department worked as assistants to Korolev I.K., Sokolov V.A., Zhdanko K.A., Levina E.M., Krishtopenko L.S., Vasilenko A.N., who headed the department in 1979-1980
From 1980 to 2006 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus O.P. Chudakov. In 2000, the Department of Surgical Dentistry was renamed into the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. During this period, the department was located on the basis of the 9th city clinical hospital in Minsk.
From 2006 to 2012, the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor A.V. Glinnik.

The staff of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery is represented by 30 teachers, including: 1 Doctor of Medical Sciences, 16 Candidates of Sciences, 12 people have the academic title of Associate Professor, 80% of employees have the highest and first medical qualification categories. The percentage of graduation in the department is 56.7%.
Since 2008, the department has been located in the 11th city clinical hospital of Minsk, where the departments of maxillofacial surgery No. 1 and No. 2 function. The clinical bases of the department are also the Republican Clinical Dental Polyclinic; dental clinics in Minsk No. 3, 4, 11, 13, dental departments of general polyclinics No. 2, 4, 8, 25, 30, 31, 35, railway dental clinic, Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Oncology and Medical Radiology named after N.N. Alexandrova.
Every year, the staff of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery conducts 700-900 inpatient, 1000-1200 outpatient emergency and planned surgical interventions and 7000-8000 tooth extractions, consultations of 7500-9000 patients with various congenital and acquired pathologies of the face and neck are carried out. The employees of the department carry out planned and emergency visits to medical institutions in Minsk and the republic for consultations and providing qualified assistance to patients.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is constantly training scientific personnel in graduate school and practical doctors in clinical residency.
