From March 11 to April 17, the was held the 14th Republican Russian Language Competition for foreign students studying at the universities of the Republic of Belarus "Russian Language: From Understanding to Dialogue" at the Faculty of Philology of Belarusian State University.
This year, 76 students and listeners from 15 countries took part in the competition. Participants competed in six sections based on their level of proficiency in Russian as a foreign language, ranging from A1 to C2. Level A1 allows foreign citizens to meet basic communication needs when communicating with native speakers in a minimal range of situations. Communication situations are related to everyday and socio-cultural spheres, while the set of linguistic tools enabling communication is strictly minimized in accordance with communicative needs. Level C2 indicates a high level of communicative competence in all areas of communication.
Our participant from Syria, Ibrahim Daniel, a student of Belarusian State Medical University, competed in Section 5 (Level C1). The competition was held in two stages.
The first stage required the creation of a video "Belarus and My Country: A Dialogue of Cultures". In his presentation, Daniel noted that this topic was particularly close to his heart, as he grew up at the intersection of two cultures: his father is from Syria and his mother is from Belarus. In accordance with the rules, the work was filmed in a single continuous shot without any editing cuts; the contestant was in the frame throughout the entire recording; the use of a soundtrack was not permitted.
The second stage was held via videoconference, where participants demonstrated their proficiency in spontaneous speech. Topics for Sections 5 and 6 were given immediately before the test. Daniel's monologue was based on Friedrich Nietzsche's words "Friendship is not planned, love is not shouted about, truth is not proven". The contestant discussed the spontaneity of genuine feelings, the importance of acting on words, and the uselessness of excuses.
Following the competition, Ibrahim Daniel was awarded a First Place Diploma in Section 5. The jury, consisting of representatives from Belarusian universities, noted his high level of language proficiency and creative approach to completing the tasks.
We congratulate Ibrahim Daniel on his well-deserved victory and wish him continued success in his Russian language studies!
