The purpose of improving the preclinical training of students of the Faculty of Dentistry and the integration of teaching therapeutic and orthopedic dentistry, by order of the rector of the Minsk Order of the Red Labor Institute of the Medical Institute No. 503-uch dated 05.09.1996, an interdepartmental course «General Dentistry' was organized on the basis of the departments of the Banner of Orthopedic and Therapeutic Dentistry. Associate Professor of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry N.M. Poloneichik was appointed as the director of the course. The course included teachers from the departments of therapeutic dentistry and orthopedic dentistry
Based on the decision of the MGMI Council, by order of the rector No. 653-uch dated October 15, 1997, the course was reorganized into the Department of General Dentistry.

In the period from the creation of the course to the organization of the department, work was carried out on the commissioning of classrooms for practical exercises with students of 1 and 2 courses. For the equipment of the classroom, 24 workplaces were planned, including mobile dental units, simulators (phantoms), artificial lighting sources. Equipped with a centralized compressor room, student cloakroom and storage facilities. In December 1997, the phantom training classroom was commissioned.
For practical training with 1st year students in 1996, a student dental laboratory for 20 workplaces was equipped, including the main premises (2 classrooms) and auxiliary premises (gypsum, polymerization, foundry, etc.).
The department prepares 1-2 year students of the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine of foreign students in the following sections of dentistry: «Dental materials science», «Functional anatomy of the dentoalveolar system», «Laboratory technology for the manufacture of dentures», «Preclinical dentistry». С 2021-2022 учебного года обучение на кафедре проводится по двум модулям: Teaching at the department is carried out in two modules “Materials Science and Fundamentals of Manufacturing Dentures” and “Propaedeutics in dentistry” since the 2021-2022 academic year.
The entire team of teachers made a significant contribution to the formation and development of the department, its achievements in educational, research, and medical advisory activities. To ensure the educational process at the department, a discipline program, methodological developments for practical exercises and other educational and methodological materials have been prepared. Methodological support of the educational process was facilitated by over 55 teaching aids prepared by the staff of the department and published for students
Along with the methodological support of the educational process, the department is working on the preparation of the teaching staff. Associate professors Tahiyeva F.R., Savostikova O.S., assistants Kranivets N.A., Checha S.N., Kryvanoshchanka V.V., Lepeshava E.V., Petrazhytskaya G.V completed training in clinical residency.
During the period that has passed since the organization of the department, under the leadership of the head of the department Poloneichik N.M. theses for the degree of PhD were defended by assistants Gres N.A., Timoshenko M.V., Tereshchenko E.N., Manak T.N., Getman N.V., Malkovets O.G., Chistyakova G.G., Tahiyeva F.R, Kranivets N.A. The degree of PhD was defended by assistant Petrouk A.A. under the leadership of associate professor Chistyakova G.G. The degree of DMSc was defended by Manak T.N. in 2016. The degree of PhD was defended by assistant Savostikova O.S. under the leadership of Manak T.N. in 2019.
Krushinina Tatyana Valerievna is the Head of the Propaedeutics of Dentistry and Materials Science Department since September 2022.
Fulfilling the social order of the state for the training of highly qualified medical personnel, the staff of the department is constantly striving for world standards of ensuring the pedagogical process.
