The first department of Latin language in our higher educational institution was organized in 1944 and existed until 1955. The head of this department was Isaac Lazarevich Heinman (15.03.1899-15.01.1956), who had a pharmaceutical education.
From 1955 until September 1990, Latin teachers were part of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Minsk State Medical Institute. Since the resumption of the work of the Department of Latin in September 1990 and until November 2015, it was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Tsisyk Andrey Zinovievich, who in 1975 graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Lviv State University with a degree in classical philology, and in 1987 defended his dissertation on “Man and reality in the idylls of Theocritus (to characterize the personal beginning in the images of heroes and the author)”.
When the department was formed in 1990, it included, in addition to the head, senior lecturer, Candidate of Philological Sciences Avksentieva Albina Georgievna, senior lecturer Vasilyeva Lesya Ivanovna, teachers Vaskina Tamara Aleksandrovna, Kapitula Lyudmila Semyonovna, Morozova Irina Gennadievna, laboratory assistant Churilo Zoya Leonidovna.
Later, A. G. Avksentyeva, T. A. Vaskina, and I. G. Morozova left the department for various reasons. In 2006, L. I. Vasilyeva passed away, who successfully worked in the team for another 17 years after retirement, was the initiator of the profilization of Latin language teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry, the developer of the first version of the clinical section of the program, the author and co-author of a number of textbooks and textbooks.
The initiative to resume the work of the Department of Latin Language belonged to A. Z. Tsisyk, who headed the Latin language course in the Department of Foreign Languages of the MGMI. The experience of administrative work, the availability of the necessary number of qualified teaching staff, active work on the development of the theory of Latin medical terminology and methods of teaching medical Latin, the preparation of original educational publications-all this served A. Z. Cisyk is the basis for raising the issue of the allocation of the Latin language course to the MGMI administration as an independent specialized structural unit, which was formed by the order of the rector of the Minsk State Medical Institute of September 13, 1990 in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of 30.08.1990.
Currently, the department is headed by Natalia A. Kruglik, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor.
Now there are 9 people in the staff of the department: 1 professor (Goncharova Ninel Afinogenovna), 4 associate professors, of which 3 are candidates of philological sciences (Tsisyk Andrey Zinovievich, Kapitula Lyudmila Semenovna, Kuznetsova Elena Leonidovna), 1 Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (Kruglik Natalia Anatolyevna); 4 senior teachers (Romashkevichus Svetlana Konstantinovna, Mokritskaya Tatyana Petrovna, Lyashkevich Elena Viktorovna Pisaruk Alexandra Dmitrievna). Auxiliary staff of the department – 2 laboratory assistants.
During its existence, the department has become a recognized methodological center for teaching terminological Latin in higher and secondary medical educational institutions of the Republic of Belarus.
