The planning and organization of the educational process at the Department of General Surgery is carried out in accordance with:
- educational standards of first level of higher education;
- standard and curriculum for the specialties “General Medicine”, “Pediatrics”, “Dentistry”, “Preventive Medicine”, as well as in the specialization “Military Medicine”;
- programs of academic disciplines “General Surgery” for students of the General Medicine and pediatric faculties, “Surgical diseases” for students of the dental and medical-preventive faculties, “Medical care and manipulation techniques” for students of the General Medicine faculty, including groups that study in English.
Education in the master's degree in surgery is carried out in accordance with the educational standards of higher education of the second level, standard and curricula developed at the University and approved in the prescribed manner.
The department trains Foreign students who study in English, including students of the program of the joint Belarusian-Israeli project to train Israeli students on an abbreviated 4-year program in English with specialization in General Medicine.
The development of medicine requires a permanent increase in the level of training of future doctors, the activity of their clinical thinking, possession of practical skills, which cannot be achieved without the various pedagogical techniques and modern technological means for the learning process. Today, at the Department of General Surgery, we have a well-thought-out, harmonious system of training students, which has evolved and improved over decades.
The staff of the Department of General Surgery is constantly working on the analysis and selection of innovative teaching methods for further implementation in the educational process. Selection criteria are focused on individual characteristics, problem orientation, creativeness development and motivation of students in order to search, process and implement educational information.
The staff of the department is constantly working on the preparation of educational materials in the form of photographs, photographs, electronic reference manuals, video recordings (surgical operations, manipulations) and films, which are used during practical classes.
Various surgical interventions are demonstrated to students directly in operating rooms and remotely using videosystems. During practical classes, students are involved in work in treatment rooms and dressing rooms, examination and supervision of patients, completing of educational long cases.
The first independent practical steps in medical activity are performed by students of the medical faculty at the Department of General Surgery during nursing practice.
The exam mark is given taking into account the rating system. At the Department of General Surgery, we consider the progress, the results of practical skills exam, final classes marks, the academic long case.
The staff of the department is always ready to help students in choosing a topic for scientific work. About 30 scientific student works are prepared annually at the Department of General Surgery of the Belarusian State Medical University with high quality, based on the annual achievement of prize places at the Republican competitions.
The entire educational process at the department is accompanied by information support. The disciplines are provided with textbooks, teaching aids and teaching materials.
On the internal site of BSMU there is an electronic educational and methodological complex covering all topics for students of all specialties, which is constantly being upgraded.
For 6th year students at the Department of General Surgery, elective courses have been prepared: “Surgical Infection”, “Coloproctology”, “Surgical Technique”.
In 2023, teachers of the Department of General Surgery had the first practical classes at the Republican Center for Professional Certification and Simulation Training of Medical and Pharmaceutical Workers. The wide functionality of laparoscopic stands, as well as a simulated operating room, allows to master surgical skills both individually and in blocks, as well as perform simulated interventions in a wide range of scenarios. The center's specialists are always ready to help and are open to feedback to improve the quality of medical education.
