Research work of the department of Biological Chemistry

At the Department of Biological Chemistry, 12 doctoral and 58 candidate of science (PhD) theses have been defended. More than 600 scientific papers issued in recent years.

The research work at the Department of Biological Chemistry is characterized by the principles of continuity of generations, loyalty to traditional directions, and constant expansion of scientific interests. The Department can rightly take pride in achievements of its’ honorable scientists – professor Tahanovich A.D., professor Morozkina T.S., professor Kukhta V.K. - who made great contribution to the development of biochemistry and supervised the training of highly qualified specialists working in our country and abroad. The research work is currently guided by the Head of the Department, professor Tahanovich A.D.

Scientific Research Directions

The research activities at the department are carried out within the framework of state research programs. Several state-funded research projects are currently in progress:

1. Molecular mechanisms of development, monitoring and treatment of diseases accompanied by lung fibrosis and malignant tumor growth (2018 — 2022).

2. To study the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the development of steroid resistance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in order to optimize their treatment (2017 — 2019). Research Director – professor A.D.Tahanovich. Project Executor – A.H.Kadushkin, PhD.

3. Using polymorphism in peripheral blood lymphocyte genes to develop approaches to determining the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and predicting the course of the disease (2017 — 2019).  Research Director – A.H.Kadushkin, PhD. Project Executor – C. Khotko.

I.L.Katovich, assistant professor of the department, is working on the doctoral thesis “Rationale for the postnatal antioxidants use in the dysplasia development”. Scientific Director – professor A.D.Tahanovich.

Previous successfully completed research projects include:

Studying the populations of lymphocytes and their protein ligands in the peripheral blood of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in order to develop criteria reflecting the course of the disease in smokers and nonsmokers, as well as to determine new directions for pathogenetic COPD treatment (2014-2016). Scientific Director – professor A.D.Tahanovich. The data obtained formed the basis of the PhD thesis of A.H.Kadushkin.

Study of tumor-associated proteins and indicators of tumor intoxication in the serum of patients with uterine cancer (2011 – 2017). Scientific Directors – professor A.D.Tahanovich, professor V.I. Prokhorova. The data obtained formed the basis of the PhD thesis of T.Yu.Prinkova.

Studying the molecular mechanisms of lung injury in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (2011 – 2013). Research Director – professor A.D.Tahanovich. Project Executors – I.L. Katovich, Zh.A. Rutkouskaya.

Synthesis of new anti-gout agents based on 2-isoxazolines (2011-2013).  Research Director – assistant professor M.M. Kauhanka.

Synthesis of new anti-tuberculosis substances of the pyrazinamide series (2011-2013).  Research Director – assistant professor M.M. Kauhanka.

In addition, the other actual problems have been studied recently at the department:

  • The effect of lectins of medicinal plants on the lung cells functional activity (prof. Tahanovich A.D., ass.prof. Devina E.A.)
  • The effect of cigarette smoke resins on the functional activity and indicators of metabolism of lung cells (ass.prof. Devina E.A.)
  • Mechanisms involved in hypoxia and hyperthermia influence on alveolar macrophages (ass.prof. Barabanova E.M.)
  • Features of phospholipid enzymatic cleavage by alveolar macrophages in normal conditions and in acute lung injury (ass.prof.  Golovach O.A.)
  • Biochemical parameters of exhaled air condensate in determining the degree of the lung tissue damage caused by artificial lung ventilation (Smirnov A.S.)
  • Biochemical markers of tuberculous pleuritis and their use as differential diagnosis criteria for this disease (Said A. Moallem, Iran).
  • Tumor-associated proteins, parameters of blood coagulation and endogenous  intoxication in preoperative prognosis in endometrial cancer patients (ass. prof. Prinkova T.Yu.)
  • Ligand-receptor relationships in blood lymphocyte population and their prognostic role in smokers and nonsmokers with COPD (ass. prof. Kadushkin A.G.)
  • Polymorphysm of cytokine genes in patients with COPD (ass. Khotko C.)

The research work carried out at the Department answers the demands of practical health care and is implemented in the medical practice as evidenced by the numerous instructions for use approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. Research results are annually reported by the staff of the department at the BSMU scientific sessions, republic and international scientific conferences and congresses.

Cooperation with other scientific institutions
