History – Department of Internal Diseases, Cardiology and Rheumatology with a course of advanced training and retraining

The 2nd Department of Internal Diseases was established in 1963 due to an increase in the admission of students to the Minsk State Medical Institute and formation of two Departments of Therapy and two Departments of Surgery.

Since the creation of the Department and until 1994, it was headed by Honored Worker of Science of the Byelorussian SSR, Professor G. P. Matvejkov.

From 1994 to January 2020, the Department was headed by D. Sc., Professor N.F. Soroka. Currently the Department is headed by PhD, Associate Professor A. M. Boris. The Department trains 4th, 5th and 6th year students of the Faculty of General Medicine and The Medical Faculty of Foreign Students in the following disciplines: 'Internal Diseases', 'Clinical Immunology, Allergology', 'Clinical Pathological Physiology', 'Clinical Rheumatology'.

Currently, the Department employs 3 Professors, 19 Associate Professors and 3 Teaching Assistants. Teachers of the Department are highly qualified specialists (19 have the Highest Qualification Category, 5 have the First Qualification Category), and they undergo advanced professional training within the established time frame. Many teachers have completed Internships at foreign Medical Universities in clinics of Japan, Canada, Germany, Belgium, and the United States.

At the present time, the clinical bases of the department are the 'Minsk Scientific and Practical Center of Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology' and the 2nd City Clinical Hospital.

Professors and Associate Professors who made the most significant contribution to the formation and development of the Department

In 1963, Professor Grigorij Pavlovich Matvejkov (1929 - 2002) became the Head of the newly founded Department of Hospital Therapy, later renamed the 2nd Department of Internal Diseases of the Minsk State Medical Institute, which he successfully supervised for 31 years. From 1994 until the last days of his life, Grigorij Pavlovich Matvejkov worked as a Professor of the Department.

In 1959 G.P. Matvejkov successfully defended his PhD. thesis, and in 1967 he defended his doctoral dissertation 'Clinical and electrophysiological analysis of cardiac activity in chronic tonsillitis.' In 1969 G.P. Matvejkov was awarded the academic title of Professor.

A talented scientist and organizer Professor Matvejkov was at the origin of the development of the Rheumatological medical care in Belarus. He was the founder of the school of Rheumatologists and was deservedly called the 'Patriarch of Belarusian Rheumatology'. Together with his followers, Professor Matvejkov worked out the most urgent problems of Rheumatology: methods of early diagnosis of diffuse connective tissue diseases and diseases of the joints, the most effective schemes and methods of treatment. From 1968 to 1990, Professor Matvejkov concurrently worked as the Chief Internist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic, paid much attention to improving the therapeutic care.

Professor Matvejkov is the author of over 320 publications. He wrote 12 monographs, educational and reference manuals for doctors and medical students. Monographs and reference books written or edited by Professor Matvejkov are popular and read by doctors not only in Belarus, but also in Russia and Ukraine. The monographs 'Tonsilogenic heart lesions' (1974), 'Clinical rheography' (1976), 'Rheumatism' (1979), 'Rheumatologist's manual' (1983), ' Primary care physician's manual' (1986), 'Family doctor's manual' (1992), 'Manual of differential diagnosis of internal diseases' (1990), 'Treatment of internal diseases' (1997), 'Clinical diagnosis' (1999), 'Physician's manual' (2000) brought special fame to Professor Matvejkov. Five doctoral and 58 PhD theses were defended under the supervision of Professor Matvejkov.

Today the disciples of Professor Matvejkov occupy many leading positions in the health care system of Belarus, and he is remembered and respected by doctors of our republic and foreign countries.

For more than 20 years Professor Matvejkov has been the Head of the Belarusian State Scientific Society of Physicians and the Head of the Specialized Council for the defense of doctoral and candidate dissertations.

For active and productive work Professor Matvejkov received many certificates of honor and commendations from the Ministry of Health, the rector's office and was awarded the order and medals.

Professor Susanna Semionovna Pshonik was a highly respected Professor-internist not only at her own Department, but also in Belarus as a whole. She paid much attention to the education of young doctors, led the Student Scientific group of the Department.

Professor Nikolaj Fiodorovich Soroka (born in 1949) headed the 2nd Department of Internal Diseases in 1994-2020. From 1975 to the present, he has been employed at the Belarusian State Medical University, where he worked his way up from a post-graduate student to the Head of the Department. Professor N.F. Soroka is a specialist in the field of Internal Diseases and Rheumatology, one of the leading scientists in the field of Clinical Medicine, who has made a significant contribution to the development of new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of Internal Diseases. For more than 20 years he has been the Head of the State Center of Rheumatology.
