The 2nd Department of Childhood Diseases was organized in 1969, on the basis of the 3rd Children's Clinical Hospital, and it had the status of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics.
The first head of the department was PhD, Associate Professor E.S. Gordey, student and follower of Academician Leonov V.A.
Associate Professor Evgeniy Silvestrovich Gordey was the Head of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics since 1969 to 1986. He was an Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics since 1986 to 1988. At the same time, he was the chief pediatric pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR (1980-1994). After that he was an Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics from 1986 to 1988. Then he was the Head of the 2nd Department of Childhood Diseases of the Minsk State Medical Institute from 1988 to 1994.
Throughout his entire creative career, the main direction of his scientific activity has been the problems of bronchopulmonary pathology of children. He studied the content of individual microelements in the blood of children with pneumonia. He worked on the treatment of pneumonia, also he worked on the problem of chronic nonspecific lung diseases in children. From the late 1980s he worked on issues of children's health in connection with the Chernobyl accident. He published over 80 scientific works. He was the author of an invention and 3 rationalization proposals. He prepared 3 PhD in medicine. Also he was awarded with certificates of honor of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR (1991, 1994), the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education of the BSSR (1981), marked with the badge «Excellence in Healthcare» (1988).
Astakhova Larisa Nikolaevna was the next Head of the department.
She was a student of Academician V.A. Leonov and Professor V.A. Usov.
Professor Larisa Nikolaevna Astakhova was the Head of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics with the Course of Endocrinology at the Minsk State Medical Institute since 1986 to 1988.
Professor Larisa Nikolaevna Astakhova worked on the problems of impaired purine metabolism and microelements in children. She studied the clinical and metabolic features of the acetonemic syndrome. She proposed methods for correcting purine metabolism in children. Her dissertation was: «Manifestation of impaired purine metabolism in children and their metabolic correction» (1985).
Since 1986, the main direction of scientific research was the medical consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. She worked as the Assistant Director of the Research Institute of Radiation Medicine of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, the head of the laboratory of pediatric endocrinology from 1988 to 1995.
In total, more than 220 scientific works were published. She was co-author of the monograph «Companion of a pediatrician», 1976, «Practical skills of a pediatrician», 1983, «Healthy child», 1984
She was the chairman of the problem commission for the elimination of the medical consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986.
She was awarded with certificates of honor of the Ministry of Health of the BSSR, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education of the BSSR.
In 1990 the department consisted of associate professors: Ten S.I., Gres N.A., Stetsko M.N., Komlikov Yu.Yu .; assistants: Radyuk K.A., Artishevskaya L.A., Chernous G.M., Kharamonenko A.S., Rys N.G., Khomichuk T.V., Rodtsevich O.G., Bobrovnichiy V.I.
5-6-year students of the pediatric faculty studied at the department in those years. Since the day of the creation of the department, the main direction of its was the study of chronic pathology of the bronchopulmonary system in children.
The staff of the department constantly did a lot of work to organize and improve educational, methodological, medical and research work. Also they organized the Belarusian Republic Children’s Center of Pulmonology and Cystic Fibrosis, which was headed by the chief pediatric pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, the head of the department E.S. Gordey.
The PhD in medicine, Professor T.N. Voytovich was elected the head of the department in 1994.
She graduated the pediatric faculty of Minsk State Medical Institute and she was a student of professor Usov I.N. She continued to develop the traditions and scientific direction of the department, laid down by its founders, associate professor. E.S. Gordey and professor I.N. Usov.
By this period, the department already has the status of the 2nd department of childhood diseases. Students of 4, 5, 6 courses of the pediatric faculty study at it. Since 2001, with the merger of the 2nd and 3rd departments of childhood diseases, students of the Faculty of General Medicine and the Faculty for International Students began to study at the department.
The scientific topics were expanded by studying the issues of etiology and pathogenesis, clinical picture, primary and secondary prevention of diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory systems and gastrointestinal tract diseases, however, the priority scientific directions of the department remained the development and implementation of protocols for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic nonspecific lung diseases.
International relations also began to develop actively, which was manifested by the annual holding of International scientific and practical conferences (Italy, Germany, England), internships for employees (Germany, Japan, Italy, England, USA).
Over the years, the staff of the department had changed significantly, it was 2 professors (prof. T.N. Voitovich, prof. V.A. Kuvshinnikov), 8 associate professors (A.V. Sikorsky, L.V. Grak, E. A. A. Baranaeva, A. A. Ustinovich, V. I. Bobrovnichiy, V. V. Strogiy, I. A. Loginova, I. I. Savanovich), 12 assistants (T. V. Khomichuk, O. A. Platonova, L. I. Vyazova, S. G. Shenets, A. N. Bashlakova, J. A. Bezler, E. Yu. Dolidovich, E. A. Moroz, Kozarezov S. N., A. P. Stadnik, E. N. Alferovich, S.A. Sukalo, Zagorskiy S.E. (from 2008 to 2012)) and 5 employees of the auxiliary staff (leading laboratory E.V. Savitskaya, leading laboratory V.S. Puparevich, Leading laboratory S.K. Akifieva, laboratory S.V. Lavrenkova, laboratory S.A. Lenko).
The average age of employees is 50 years. The department annually trains 2-3 clinical residents, including foreign ones (Lebanon).
10 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertations were prepared and defended during this period. At that time there was an active work on 2 doctoral dissertations (associate professor A.V.Sikorsky, associate professor V.V.Strogiy).
Post-graduate students and applicants studied at the department, they later became its employees (ass. Bezler Zh.A., ass. Zagorskiy S.E., ass. Moroz E.A., ass. Stadnik A.P.), and post-graduate student of the department (1979-1992) Germanenko I.G., associate professor, vice-rector for medical work, BSMU.
The staff of the department in different years of its existence were the main specialists of the Ministry of Healthcare: Assoc. Gordey E.S. (from 1974 to 1994), prof. Voitovich T.N. (from 1994 to 2005), Assoc. Bobrovnichy V.I. (from 2006 to the present), Assoc. Savanovich I.I. (from 2008 to the present), and the main specialists of the health committee of the Minsk city executive committee: ass. Zagorskiy S.E. (from 2000 to 2008), Assoc. Bobrovnichy V.I. (from 2000 to the present).
For achievements in work, the staff of the department were awarded with diplomas of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus (associate professor Gordey ES, professor Voitovich T.N., associate professor Sikorsky AV, associate professor Bobrovnichy V.I., associate professor Savanovich I.I.), BSMU (associate professor Gordey E.S., professor Voitovich T.N., professor Kuvshinnikov V.A., associate professor Sikorsky A.V. and others).
A number of employees of the department were awarded the honorary badge «Excellence in Health Care» (associate professor Gordey ES, professor Voitovich TN, professor Kuvshinnikov VA, associate professor Sikorsky AV).

Prof. Voitovich T.N. headed the Council for the Defense of Doctoral Dissertations from 1995 to 2005. She was a scientific editor of the Medical Journal since its foundation. Also she was a member of the editorial boards of other medical journals of the Republic of Belarus.
The staff of the department constantly review and oppose candidate and doctoral dissertations (prof. Voitovich T.N., prof. Kuvshinnikov V.A., associate professor Grak L.V., associate professor Baranaeva E.A., associate professor Ustinovich A.A., associate professor Strogiy VV), thereby participating in the training of scientific personnel.
The 2nd Department of Childhood Diseases, despite its age (43 years), is developing, replenishing every year with new young employees and can be proud of its achievements in pedagogical, medical consultative and educational work.
