A pediatric faculty has been opened at the Minsk Medical Institute in 1964. It was organized by DSc, Professor Ivan Nesterovich Usov, Honored Scientist of the BSSR (13.10.1921-19.01.1994).
Ivan Nesterovich graduated with honors from the Minsk Medical Institute in 1951. He was post-graduate student of the Department of Children's Diseases of the Minsk Medical Institute (1951-1954). I.N. Usov defended his PhD thesis (“Copper, zinc, cobalt and nickel in the blood of newborns and women in childbirth”) in 1954. He was elected Associate Professor of the Department of Childhood Diseases of the Minsk Medical Institute in 1958. I.N. Usov successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “Features of water-salt metabolism in Bright's disease in children” (1965). In 1967 he was awarded the academic title of professor. For many years, I.N. Usov worked on the problems of treating diffuse kidney diseases in children. In 1968 I.N. Usov became the Head of the Department of Faculty Pediatrics with the course of propaedeutics of childhood diseases (since 1984 - the 1st Department of Childhood Diseases) of the Pediatric Faculty of the Minsk Medical Institute. The first employees of the department were Gordey E.S., Shostko V.M., Chichko M.V., Korshun I.V., Stankevich Z.A., Medvedeva V.I., Derflio R.U., Fursevich V.M., Denisevich N.I., Astakhova L.N., since 1976 - Voitovich T.N., Elinevskaya G.F.
Under the leadership of I.N. Usov, 4 doctoral dissertations and 30 PhD theses were defended. Large studies have been carried out in the field of pediatric nephrology and other urgent problems of pediatrics. He has published over 300 scientific papers, including 34 in foreign publications; author of articles in the Great Medical Encyclopedia, scientific editor of a number of collections of scientific works (2 - in English). I.N. Usov prepared over 20 guidelines for doctors and students in various areas of pediatrics. He is the author of about 20 popular science brochures.
I.N. Usov paid much attention to the preparation of manuals and guidelines for pediatricians. These are “Treatment and prevention of nephritis in children (1968),“ Kidney disease in children ”, et al. (1972),“ Pneumonia with a protracted course in children ”, et al., (1989),“ A manual on pediatrics for doctors ”, Et al., RE Mazo (1969), which was republished in the Mongolian People's Republic (1972),“ Directory of the local pediatrician ”, et al., (1991),“ Companion of the pediatrician ”, et al., (1976 ), “Practical skills of a pediatrician”, et al., (1982, 1989, 1990), “Healthy child.” Pediatrician's Handbook “, et al., (1984, 1994), Pediatric Pharmacoreceptual Handbook, et al., (1990, 1994), Rickets in Children co-authored with ZA Stankevich (1980) and others.
From 1971 to 1973, I.N. Usov worked as director of the Scientific and Practical Pediatric Center of the Soviet Red Cross in India, and from 1979 to 1980 as a WHO consultant at the Ministry of Health of the Mongolian People's Republic.

Zinaida Antonovna Stankevich (01.10.1935), PhD, Associate Professor, a student of Professor I.N. Usov headed the 1st Department of Childhood Diseases in 1989 - 1994.
Z.A. Stankevich successfully defended his PhD thesis “The content of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, the activity of alkaline phosphatase in the blood serum and the processes of ossification in twin children.” in 1972. She is the author of more than 60 scientific works on topical issues of pediatrics, the monograph “Rickets in children” in collaboration with IN Usov (1980), “Handbook on the treatment of childhood diseases” (1998, 2003). She has published more than 10 teaching aids for doctors and students, including “Diagnosis of kidney diseases, treatment and rehabilitation of children with nephritis living in areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster” (1992), “Clinical assessment of urinary syndrome in children” (2003), “Clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infection in children” (2005), “Urinary syndrome in childhood and its clinical assessment” (2009), “Combined microbial inflammatory diseases of the urinary and reproductive systems in children” (2009 ), “Rickets-like diseases in children” (2010) and others. Z.A. Stankevich was awarded the badge “Excellence in Health Care” (1967), numerous certificates of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, BSMU.
Alexander Vasilievich Sukalo (25.02.1951), Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus, PhD, DSc, Professor, became the Head of the 1st Department of Childhood Diseases in 1994
A.V. Sukalo defended his PhD thesis “Clinical and immunological characteristics and prevention of recurrence of glomerulonephritis in children” in 1982, and he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “Primary glomerulonephritis in children of Belarus in modern environmental conditions” in 1995.
A.V. Sukalo introduced the method of nephrobiopsy in pediatric nephrology in Belarus, he is one of the organizers of the Pediatric Hemodialysis Center, scientific director of the Republican Center for Pediatric Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy.
The research results of A.V. Sukalo are summarized in a number of scientific and methodological developments, instructions for the use of methods approved by the Ministry of Health of Belarus, published in such authoritative scientific publications as Clinical immunology (Germany), Pediatrics (Rus), Pediatrics (USA).
Under the leadership of A.V. Sukalo, the scientific projects “Healing and diagnostic technologies”, “Mother and child”, “Expertise and medical rehabilitation”, of the Fund for Fundamental Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are being carried out. Every year, under the leadership of A.V. Sukalo hosts international scientific and practical conferences on pediatric nephrology, in 2006 - the European School of Pediatric Nephrology (ESPN).
A.V. Sukalo is a member of the board of the Creative Association of Pediatric Nephrologists (Russia), chief freelance pediatric nephrologist of the Ministry of Health of Belarus, head of the center for pediatric nephrology and renal replacement therapy, expert at the center of expertise and testing, member of the editorial boards of the journals “Healthcare”, “Nephrology”, “Medical Panorama”, “Reproductive health”, etc. Excellence in Public Health of the USSR (1978), Excellence in Public Health of the Republic of Belarus (2012)
Since 2015, A.V. Sukalo is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
