International Student Olympiad at the Department of Periodontology, Belarusian State Medical University
On April 24, the Department of Periodontology of Belarusian State Medical University held an International Student Olympiad. The event, which brought together over 15 participants from among the best fourth-year students, became one of the department's highlights this semester.
Participants from Belarusian State Medical University were joined by students from Samara State Medical University.
More than 50 contestants took part in the preliminary theoretical round of online testing, 15 of whom were advanced to the main stage.
The Olympiad was opened by head of the periodontology department of BSMU, Professor Lyudmila Dedova and the chair of the commission, professor of the Periodontology Department of BSMU Yulia Denisova. Next, Eduard Machkalyan, Head of the Department of General Dentistry with a Course in Orthopedic Dentistry, Faculty of Advanced Training and Advanced Training of VSMU, made a welcoming speech, setting a festive tone for the competition and wishing all participants good luck.
The organizers set an ambitious goal for the participants: not simply to reproduce textbook knowledge, but to demonstrate systems thinking in approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. Participants had to complete four sets of tests, where the theoretical foundation was inseparable from manual skills.
The main stage included several practical tasks, where students had to establish a diagnosis based on video data, determine the name and purpose of periodontal instruments, select personal oral hygiene products, and demonstrate a scaling technique on a model.
Festive music, colorful balloons, spring flowers, the welcoming smiles of the judges, and a delicious cake created a festive atmosphere of goodwill from the very first minutes and helped the participants to cope with their nerves and the competition tasks throughout the Olympiad.
All students demonstrated a high level of clinical reasoning and professional excellence. Eleven finalists were selected for the final round.
In the final round, contestants had to interpret cone-beam computed tomography data, complete a periodontal chart, and create a comprehensive treatment plan for a patient with periodontal disease.
The jury, which included faculty members from the department, noted a high level of preparation of the participants!
