The staff of the Pediatric Infectious Department conducts multidirectional research work. The sphere of scientific interests includes topical issues of such sections of pediatric infectious diseases as neuroinfections, respiratory, intestinal, airborne, perinatal, herpetic, tick-borne infections, as well as HIV infection. Recently, the department has been attaching great importance to the improvement of vaccine prevention of infectious diseases in children of our republic. The Deputy Head of the Department for scientific and research work is candidate of medical sciences (PhD) Serhiyenka E.N.
Currently, the topic of the department's research and development work is «Infectious diseases in childhood: the current course of diseases, improving approaches to diagnosis, treatment and medical prevention». The work is designed for five years (2021-2025).
The purpose of the study: to develop diagnostic algorithms and optimal treatment and medical prevention of childhood infectious diseases in the Republic.
Research tasks:
- to analyze the etiological spectrum, the effectiveness of antibacterial therapy for atypical pneumonia in children;
- to analyze the etiological spectrum and effectiveness of antibacterial therapy for pneumonia in children with malignant neoplasms;
- to assess the immunological status of pediatric patients with sepsis and severe bacterial infections.
- to assess the immunological status of pediatric patients with Crohn's disease and chronic inflammatory bowel disease;
- to analyze the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory indicators of various clinical stages of tick-borne borreliosis, to evaluate the effectiveness of medical prevention and antibacterial therapy of this disease in children;
- to analyze epidemiological, clinical and laboratory parameters in children with infectious exanthema;
- to analyze clinical and laboratory parameters, instrumental examination data and the effectiveness of etiotropic therapy in children with herpesvirus infections of 6 and 7 types;
- to analyze the physical development and etiological spectrum of diseases in children of the first year of life born to HIV-infected mothers;
- to conduct a comparative analysis of the diagnostic significance of various methods of examining children with neuroinfections, toxoplasmosis, tick-borne borreliosis, atypical pneumonia, infectious exanthema.
Expected research results:
- Study of the immune status of children with sepsis and severe bacterial infections.
- Determination of the etiological spectrum, the effectiveness of antibacterial therapy for atypical pneumonia in children.
- Determination of the etiological spectrum, the effectiveness of antibacterial therapy for pneumonia in children with malignant neoplasms.
- Improvement of laboratory diagnostics and evaluation of the effectiveness of medical prevention and treatment of acquired and congenital ixodic tick-borne borreliosis in children.
- Improvement of laboratory diagnostics of infectious exanthema in children.
- Improvement of laboratory diagnostics, etiotropic therapy of herpes-viral infections of 6 and 7 types in children.
- Improvement of laboratory diagnostics and etiotropic therapy of congenital and acquired toxoplasmosis in children.
- Identification of immunodeficiency in patients with Crohn's disease and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and determination of the possibilities for its correction.
- Identification of the etiological spectrum of diseases in children of the first year of life born to HIV-infected mothers.
The results of the work will be used in children's infectious diseases hospitals and outpatient clinics to improve the quality and volume of care for children with the most pressing infectious diseases, which will reduce the duration of the disease, the cost of therapy, prevent children from becoming disabled from this pathology, and improve the indicators of demographic security in the Republic of Belarus.
The staff of the department annually participate in the work of scientific and practical conferences, seminars, congresses on topical issues of pediatric infectious diseases and make reports, presenting the results of research work.
Currently, research at the department is carried out within the framework of the following research projects:
- «To develop and introduce methods of diagnostics and treatment of neurological diseases associated with roseolovirus infection in children», number of registration: 20180437 (scientific adviser - Prof. Romanova O.N.);
- «To develop an algorithm for clinical and laboratory diagnostics of severe intestinal mixed infections», number of registration: 20201735 (scientific supervisor - Prof. Romanova O.N.).
Previously, a study was carried out on the prevalence, characteristics of the course of atypical pneumonia in children and the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy. The study was carried out within the framework of the scientific project «To develop an algorithm for the diagnosis and method of treatment of atypical pneumonia in children of different age groups», terms of completion: 2016-2020, supervisor - Prof. Romanova O.N.).
