XIV Student Skills Olympiad with International Participation at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry

On April 10, there was held the XIV International Student Skills Olympiad in Pediatric Dentistry in the practice-oriented building of Belarusian State Medical University. The event was attended by the 4^th and 5^th-year students from four universities: Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), Vitebsk State Order of Peoples' Friendship Medical University (VSMU), Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Russian University of Medicine", as well as the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Smolensk State Medical University".

The guest team consisted of 7 participants, while 11 students from the Faculty of Dentistry of BSMU decided to try their hand at the competition.

The welcoming remarks were given by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor Yuri Sokolov, PhD in Medicine, Vice-Rector for International Relations Dmitry Chuikov, Head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tamara Terekhova. The event was also attended by Olga Kovylina, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of Russian University of Medicine, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Anastasia Dubovets, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with the Course of Advanced Training and Retraining, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of Vitebsk State Medical University, and also Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry with a course in orthodontics of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “Siberian State Medical University” Tatyana Stepanova.

Before the competition, each team gave a presentation introducing their university, faculty, and team members, which helped the participants get to know each other more quickly. The competition program included tasks on pediatric therapeutic dentistry. The Olympiad was held in two stages: the first stage was theoretical, including a blitz tournament, the second was practical (implementing the vital pulpotomy method of a permanent molar with unformed roots).

During breaks between rounds, representatives of GlaxoSmithKline and ROCS performed.

The theoretical part was assessed by candidates of medical sciences, associate professors Irina Losik, Daria Naumovich and Margarita Shilova. The practical part was assessed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tatyana Popruzhenko, and Candidates of Medical Sciences, Associate Professors Elena Gulko and Alexander Yatsuk.

The jury unanimously recognized a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge of the participants and selected the winners. The first place was given to Ekaterina Legchilina (VSMU), while the second place was shared between Alexandra Adamtsevich (BSMU) and Yulia Rafikova (Russian University of Medicine). The bronze winners were Polina Vavulo (BSMU), Anatoly Tkachenko (FSBEI VO "SSMU") and Kirill Novik (VSMU). All participants were awarded certificates and commemorative prizes, and the winners and runners-up received diplomas and gifts.

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry thanks the university administration and the dean's office of the Faculty of Dentistry, as well as ROCS, Lacalut, MODUM, GlaxoSmithKline, and VMK-Dent for their assistance in organizing and holding the Olympiad and awarding the winners.
