Celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry

From the 31st of March to the 4th of April, the Faculty of Dentistry of our university held a series of festive events dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the faculty. This significant event brought together students, lecturers and graduates who contributed to the development of dental education.

The opening ceremony of the Faculty of Dentistry Week took place in the foyer of the main building. The event was opened by Sergey Rubnikovich, Rector of the University, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor:

"The Faculty of Dentistry solves the main tasks of our medical education in preparing qualified competitive specialists, patriots, young people with a high civic position and foreign students for practical healthcare in the countries from which they came to study with us".

Continuing the ceremonial part, the dean of the dental faculty, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Pavel Markautsan noted:

"The Faculty of Dentistry is 65 years old. This is not just an anniversary, but also a tradition that speaks of your dedication to your professional work as a dentist, and of the gratitude of a huge number of patients to whom you have returned life and health".

The celebration was attended by students - leaders of public organizations and fighters of student squads, volunteers, athletes, as well as lecturers, as well as deans of past years who made a great contribution to the development of the faculty. The guests of honor were Associate Professor of the Department of Biological Chemistry, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Alexander Kolb, Professor of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery of the Face with a course of advanced training and retraining, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Alexander Lastovka and Associate Professor of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry and Orthodontics, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Sergey Parkhamovich.

Representatives of the BSMU student club showed creative and musical performances: the Esculapius folk theater and their soloist Daria Barduleva, a second-year student of the Faculty of Dentistry. Also, a special guest, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Irina Dorofeeva, participated at the event.

From the 31st of March to the 1st of April, the departments of the faculty and the practice-oriented training building of Belarusian State Medical University hosted international professional skills Olympiads in dental propaedeutics and materials science, aesthetic restoration, periodontology, pediatric dentistry, surgical dentistry and propaedeutics of surgical diseases of the maxillofacial region, maxillofacial surgery and topographic anatomy of the head and neck, orthodontics, orthopedic dentistry and endodontics. Our students showed themselves brilliantly, demonstrating their knowledge and skills. It was a great opportunity for future dentists not only to test their strengths, but also to exchange experiences with the colleagues from other countries.

Also on the 1st of April, there was held an award ceremony for the winners of international professional skills Olympiads in the reading room of the BSMU library. The Rector of the university Sergey Rubnikovich presented the winners with diplomas and memorable gifts, noting their desire to develop and improve their skills in their profession. The award ceremony was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty Pavel Markautsan and the Deputy Dean, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Viktor Poboynev.

The students expressed their gratitude to the university administration, faculty and departments for the opportunity to test their theoretical and practical skills. The Perpetuum mobile violin ensemble, Oksana Oreshchenko, a 2nd-year student of the Faculty of Dentistry, student of the year of Belarusian State Medical University-2024, soloist of the Esculapius folk theater, and the Kantare vocal group gave the guests unforgettable moments!

On the third day of the Faculty of Dentistry week, on the 2nd of April, there was held the international student scientific conference “Achievements of young dentists in science and practice – 2025”. The event brought together students and medical interns who presented their research on current topics in the field of dentistry.

17 reports were given at the conference, which covered a wide range of issues related to contemporary challenges and advances in dental practice. Among the topics were the following ones: pigmented plaque in children; the study of morphometric parameters of oral fluid preparations as additional tests to verify the malignancy of precancerous lesions of the oral mucosa; the use of cold plasma; and a qualitative assessment of the marginal fit of photocomposite restorations for treating the margin of a carious cavity. There were also covered important topics such as the following ones: modeling myocardial infarction in rats using photothrombosis; direct and indirect restorations in the reconstruction of extensive defects of dental hard tissues; pre-surgical preparation of children with congenital clefts of the upper lip and palate, as well as clinical and laboratory parameters in hospitalized patients with COVID-19-associated thrombotic complications.

Of particular interest were the issues of topography of Canalis Suinuosus and its additional canals; clinical and laboratory parallels of various forms of ANCA vasculitis; the use of CT perfusion in acute cerebrovascular accident and prevention of disintegration of components of dental implants. The discussion also included malignant neoplasms of the upper jaw in the Republic of Belarus; dentoalveolar anomalies in children and adolescents in the Samara region; intraoral scanners; the incidence of precancerous diseases of the oral mucosa in the Republic of Belarus in 2023; treatment of leukoplakia of the oral mucosa associated with candidal stomatitis.

All conference participants were awarded diplomas, which was recognition of their efforts and contribution to the development of dental science. The reports demonstrated the students' innovative approach to research and the relevance of the issues raised in modern medicine.

The intellectual game "Stomfak-65" dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the history of the dental faculty was held in the reading room of the BSMU library. Opening the event, dean of the faculty Pavel Markautsan wished all participants a successful game and victory.

The quiz consisted of five rounds: "History of the Faculty of Dentistry", "The Great Patriotic War", "Visual", "Oro Matrix" and "Tour with a bet". Seven teams from the Faculty of Dentistry, two teams from the Faculty of Medicine and a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Dentistry took part in the game. According to the results of the competition, the first place was shared by the team "Nervov.net" and the team of lecturers "Workshop of Smiles". The second place was taken by the teams "Aesculapius" and "Dental League", and the third place was given to the teams "Orbit without sugar" and "Orderly brain removal".

We would like to express special gratitude to the Primary Trade Union of Students of Belarusian State Medical University and the MegaGen company for the prizes provided, as well as to the Primary Organization of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union and head of the student campus, Aleksey Katichev, for their assistance in organizing and conducting the game.

On the 3rd of April, the sports complex of our university hosted the sportslandia "Victory Relay", in which teams of students of the 1st - 3rd year courses took part. The event was opened by the Rector of the university Sergey Rubnikovich. Also there were presented the vice-rector for ideological and educational work Denis Chernov, dean of the faculty Pavel Markautsan and deputy deans.

As a result of a tense struggle, the first-year team "Swallows" took the first place. The second place was given to the second-year team "Heirs of Victory", and the third place was given to the third-year team "Scouts". The event not only contributed to the development of sports spirit among students, but also became an excellent way to honor the memory of the Great Victory.

On the same day, the Faculty of Dentistry held master classes on current issues in dentistry. Students and practicing specialists took part in the event. Tatyana Lukyanenko, head of the Department of Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, presented the topic of radiation diagnostics in dentistry. Alexander Volchek, Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmacology, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, covered the problems of pain and anesthesia in dentistry.

Sergey Kabak, head of the Department of Human Morphology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, held a master class on practice-oriented anatomy of the upper jaw. Lyudmila Petrova, head of the Otolaryngology Department with advanced training and retraining courses, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, shared her experience of surgical approaches to the maxillary sinus. The final master class was conducted by Frantisek Vismont, head of the Department of Pathological Physiology of Belarusian State Medical University, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, who discussed the manifestations of pathology of internal organs in the oral cavity.

The event became an important platform for knowledge exchange and advanced training of specialists in the field of dentistry.

The reading room of the BSMU library hosted a student conference, "Heirs of the Great Victory", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The event brought together students, heads of departments and lecturers, which emphasizes the importance of remembering the events that changed the course of history.

The opening of the conference took place with the participation of the Vice-Rector for Ideological and Educational Work Denis Chernov. In his welcoming speech, he noted the importance of preserving historical memory and fostering patriotism among young people. The deputy deans of the faculty also took part. The conference participants honored the memory of all who fought during the war with a minute of silence.

The students presented reports in which they talked about the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and their exploits, as well as about the terrible times that our people lived through. Timofey Tolchkov, a fourth-year student, spoke on the topic "Pyotr Mironovich Masherov - an outstanding public, state and political figure." Valeria Zhikh spoke about the feat of Zinaida Mikhailovna Tusnolobova-Marchenko during the Great Patriotic War.

Artem Beloded, a 5th-year student, talked the guests about the life of Leonid Stepanovich Velichko, the founder of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry, who made a significant contribution to medical science. Ksenia Vasilevskaya, the 2nd-year student, presented a report on the genocide of the Jewish people during the war, dedicated to her ancestors who did not allow the Fascists to destroy an innocent soul. Valeria Shkabara, a second-year student, spoke about the life and history of Viktor Frank, emphasizing the importance of remembering the fates of people in those terrible years.

At the end of the event, all students were ceremoniously presented with certificates of conference participants, which became a symbol of their contribution to the preservation of historical memory. The conference "Heirs of the Great Victory" became an important step in fostering respect for the past and in forming patriotic consciousness among young people.

On the final day of the Faculty of Dentistry week, on the 4th of April, a significant event took place – a scientific and practical conference with international participation “Day of High Dentistry in the Republic of Belarus – 2025”. The conference was dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry and brought together more than 700 participants, leading specialists and experts in the field of dentistry.

The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking guests, including Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Starovoitov; Deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Healthcare, Physical Culture, Family and Youth Policy Valery Malashko; Chairman of the Minsk City Council of Deputies Artem Tsuran and Rector of Belarusian State Medical University, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Sergey Rubnikovich.

The aim of the conference was to enhance the continuous development of dentists through the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of modern dentistry. The conference participants presented the most important results of current scientific research aimed at solving problems of theoretical and practical dentistry. This became possible thanks to the developments of the scientific and pedagogical schools of Belarusian State Medical University and the exchange of experience of leading specialists from the Republic of Belarus, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey.

The Rector of the university, Sergey Rubnikovich, gave the report on the topic “The Faculty of Dentistry of Belarusian State Medical University: 65 years at the forefront of national education,” emphasizing the achievements of the faculty over the years of its existence.

Speakers, registered listeners sent from institutions by Order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, and members of the BROO of dental specialists received certificates of improvement of professional training in the specialty.

The Faculty of Dentistry week ended with a bright gala concert, which became a significant event for students, lecturers and guests of the university. The concert was attended by Sergey Rubanov, head of the administration, and Valentin Konoplev, deputy head of the administration of the Moscow district of Minsk, who congratulated everyone on the completion of the holiday.

The concert program included performances by the folk theater "Eskulapy" and its soloists: the second-year student Oksana Oreshchenko and the fifth-year student Ksenia Svetlova, talented participants of the folk theater "Med.uni.tsa", graduates of the dental faculty of previous years.

The gala evening was graced by soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre of the Republic of Belarus: Iosif Nikitenko, Alexander Gelakh and Alexander Mikhnyuk, as well as the orchestra of the Pinsk border detachment and the vocal group "Unity". Their performance was a real gift from the Faculty of Dentistry and the MegaGen company, leaving an unforgettable impression on all those present.

The week of celebrations to mark the 65th anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry strengthened the spirit of the Faculty community and was a wonderful example of its achievements and traditions that will exist in the future.
