Research activities of Normal Physiology

Over the past year, the staff of the department received 1 patent from the Russian Federation for an invention. 15 articles were published, 7 of them in journals, 8 in collections of scientific articles; in the CIS - 6 (in journals of the Russian Federation), in the far abroad - 1, electronic editions - 4. Over the years of the department's existence, according to the results of scientific research, employees have defended 4 doctoral and 28 master's theses.

Among the main activities of the department, much attention has always been paid to the scientific work of its employees. Many scientists of the department are widely known for their scientific developments in various fields of physiology. The results of scientific developments on the physiology of autonomic ganglia (Prof. I.A. Bulygin) and the physiology of thermoregulation (Prof. V.A. Gurin) were awarded the State Prizes of the USSR and Belarus.

More than half of teachers have academic degrees, including doctors of medical sciences and the corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and 1 honored scientist.

Scientific and Pedagogical School of Physiologists

The department researches the neurophysiological foundations of the formation of reactions of the cardiovascular and visual systems to sensory signals. The head of this direction is Professor A.I. Kubarko. Based on the results of these studies, the staff of the department defended dissertations, published monographs and articles in Belarusian and foreign journals and collections of scientific papers. Instructions for the comprehensive assessment and use of indicators of sensory sensitivity of the visual system for differential diagnosis of demyelinating and ischemic optic neuropathies were prepared and approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, which, together with other methods developed at the department, are used in clinical practice.

Currently, research is being carried out on the mechanisms of functioning of a hypothetical brain error detector, with the participation of which erroneous actions committed by a person are detected and corrected. This occurs with erroneous eye movements observed during saccades. In particular, these errors are detected during reading when the eyes move quickly from the end of the read line to a new one. Contrary to the popular belief that ballistic movements, which include saccadic eye movements, are not corrected, we found that these movements, if they are erroneous, are instantly detected by a brain detector, interrupted, and corrected by corrective saccades.

Within the framework of the Republican scientific program “Convergence”, the department carries out joint scientific research and the Research Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as well as joint work with the Belarusian State University and the Lublin Polytechnic University (Poland). It is planned on the basis of the results of studies of neurophysiological mechanisms that determine the light sensitivity of the visual system and its dependence on the state of hemodynamics in the vessels of the retina of the eye and brain, to develop methods, equipment, and software for the early detection of pathology of the vessels of the visual system and the human brain.

The department also researches the state of health of young people in the process of education and the development of methods and means for correcting the functional systems of the body. The head of this direction is Professor V.A. Pereverzev.

The studies carried out made it possible to establish the facts of an unsatisfactory level of physical health, both in boys (60%) and in girls (in 80%) due to a decrease in their muscle strength and reserves of the cardiorespiratory system. Long-term impairment of the state of cognitive functions and glucose metabolism was shown in students who consume alcoholic beverages, compared with teetotalers. The developed physical culture and health-improving technology of individual rationing of the intensity of physical activity when performing cyclic exercises by students, depending on their physical condition, has made it possible to increase the level of students' health. The facts of the negative effect of alcohol on mental performance and glucose metabolism in a sober person within 1-4 weeks significantly supplemented the evidence base on the negative effects of ethanol.

Based on the results of these studies, a Ph.D. thesis was defended, monographs and articles were published in domestic and foreign journals and collections.

The department has repeatedly been the organizer of international and republican conferences and congresses, in particular, the department was one of the organizers of the III International conference “Signaling mechanisms of regulation of physiological functions” and the XIV Congress of the Belarusian Society of Physiologists.
