The 3rd Department of therapeutic dentistry was organized on July 15, 2003 by the order of the rector of BSMU No. 719-0 dated 15.07.2003. By order of the rector of BSMU No. 248 dated March 18, 2022, the 3rd Department of Therapeutic Dentistry was renamed the Department of Periodontology. The main direction of scientific and pedagogical work of the Department is Periodontology. With the organization of the Department, the periodontological school of the Republic of Belarus was designated. The need for an in-depth study of this issue and a new modern approach to specialized training are consistent with the data of systematic epidemiological studies in the Republic of Belarus, which revealed a high intensity and prevalence of periodontal diseases in all age groups.
Currently, the staff of the Department is a team of like-minded people who work under the professional motto «Improve your personality». The Department has 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 5 assistants. They successfully carry out educational and methodological, scientific and consulting work at clinical bases in Minsk.
Doctor of medical Sciences, Professor Dedova Lyudmila Nikolaevna was assigned to organize the work of the team and lead the management of the Department, since her PhD and doctoral dissertations are devoted to clinical Periodontology. L. N. Dedova is the founder of the school of Periodontology in the Republic of Belarus. She is a professional, a person of high culture; she is characterized by a relentless creative search, inexhaustible hard work and an active social position. Professor Lyudmila Dedova – chairman of the Public Association of Belarussian Stomatologyst (PABS), the founder and chief editor of the scientific journal «Stomatology», a member of the editorial Board of several journals in the near and far abroad, was a member of the Council on protection of dissertations on dentistry at the BSMU and was an expert on dentistry HIGHER ATTESTATION COMMISSION of the Republic of Belarus. For many years of productive work, L. N. Dedova was repeatedly awarded with badges: «Excellent Health worker of the Republic of Belarus», «for significant personal contribution to the development of MGMI-BSMU»; honorary medals: St. Petersburg state medical University, «Honorary doctor» of the Eurasian Union state; memorial clock of BSMU; honorary diplomas and certificates: «For long-term, conscientious work and high professional skills in the field of healthcare» of the member State of the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as of the Presidium of the Republican Committee of the Belarusian professional Union of healthcare workers, the Ministry of education of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian State Medical University. Lyudmila Nikolaevna was awarded the diploma «for outstanding contribution to modern society» by the American bibliographic Institute, and was awarded the title «Woman of the year» (1998). Since 2008, she has been a full member of the International Academy of Dentists (ADI). She has published more than 300 scientific papers, 44 inventions and 40 research proposals, as well as more than 300 presentations on Periodontology, including in the near and far abroad.
The Department is actively working SSC (student scientific club). Students of the I – V courses of the faculty of dentistry take part in the work of the SSC. Cooperating with medical universities in Italy, Russia, and Ukraine, students participate in International competitions, where they repeatedly win prizes.
The 3rd Department of therapeutic dentistry of BSMU together with the PABS are the organizers of National scientific and practical seminars, conferences «Day of High dentistry in the Republic of Belarus», «International Congress on dental implantology and forum of dentists of Belarus and Russia».
