International Student Olympiad 2024 at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry

XII International Student Olympiad in Pediatric Dentistry, which was attended by 4th-5th year students from three universities - Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), Vitebsk State Order of Peoples' Friendship Medical University (VSMU) and Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Russian University of Medicine" (FSBEI HE "Russian University of Medicine"), took place on April 19. Each guest team had two participants, and from BSMU, 29 students from the Faculty of Dentistry and three students from the Faculty of Medicine, foreign students, decided to try their hand.

Dean of the Dental Faculty of Belarusian State Medical University, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Pavel Markautsan, head of the Department of Dentistry of Kirov State Medical University Svetlana Gromova, head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of BSMU, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Natalya Shakovets, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Russian University of Medicine", Candidate of Medical Sciences Olga Kovylina, Senior lecturer of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics from the course of FPK and PK, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of Vitebsk Medical University Anastasia Dubovets addressed the participants of the Olympiad with a welcoming speech.

Before the start of the competition, each team demonstrated a presentation of their university, faculty and team members, which helped those present to get to know each other faster.

The competition program included tasks on pediatric therapeutic and pediatric surgical dentistry. The Olympics took place in two stages: the first stage was the qualifying stage, the second stage was the final stage. The qualifying round involved completing tasks in a blitz tournament, after which 10 participants who scored the most points became finalists who had to complete tasks in pediatric therapeutic dentistry (treatment of dentin caries in the first permanent molar using preventive composite-silant restoration according to Simonsen R.J., Stallard R. .E.) and in pediatric surgical dentistry (choosing an anesthesia method, instruments for removing a temporary molar, calculating the effective dose of anesthetic for a known age and body weight of the child). During the breaks between rounds, a quiz on dental topics was held among students, and a representative of GlaxoSmithKline spoke.

The contestants were evaluated by a competent jury consisting of Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Daria Naumovich, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Alexander Yatsuk, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of Belarusian State Medical University Anastasia Akhremko, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of Russian University of Medicine, Candidate of Medical Sciences Olga Kovylina, head of the Department of Dentistry of Kirov State Medical University, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Svetlana Gromova, as well as senior lecturer of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with a course of FPK and PK of Vitebsk State Medical University Anastasia Dubovets.

The jury unanimously noted a high level of theoretical and practical level of the participants and determined the winners. The winner of the Olympiad was Natalia Zavershinskaya (FSBEI HE "Russian University of Medicine"), 1st place was awarded to Maria Anokhina (FSBEI HE "Russian University of Medicine"), 2nd place was shared by Ksenia Bondarenko (BSMU) and Nina Skrabets (BSMU), bronze medalists became Alexandra Leonovich (BSMU), Elizaveta Kuritskaya (BSMU) and Daria Gara (VSMU). The winners of three nominations were also determined: Victoria Galevskaya (VSMU) in the nomination “The Most Persistent in Achieving a Goal,” Ekaterina Lutskaya (BSMU) in the nomination “The Most Resourceful” and Margarita Keido (BSMU) in the nomination “The Most Assiduous.” All participants were awarded certificates and memorable prizes, winners and prize-winners were awarded diplomas and gifts.
