Term of study at the faculty of Preventive Medicine – 6 years.

The faculty of Preventive Medicine was set up in 1961 as a result of reorganization of the faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene opened in 1964. The graduates of the Faculty specialize as hygienists and epidemiologists. Besides they can work as virologists, bacteriologists, laboratory workers, pathologists, toxicologists, radiologists, dieticians, health care providers, research workers and teachers. The faculty of Preventive Medicine trains specialists first of all for the practical disease-preventive service of the Republic of Belarus. The aim of setting up the faculty, which had been the only faculty of the kind until 2002, was the necessity to train our own doctors dealing with prophylaxis, to ensure sanitary and epidemic well-being of the Belorussian population; to provide sanitary and hygienic surveillance on a national basis to prevent human diseases caused by unfavorable environmental factors. Doctors with the specialty “Preventive Medicine” are mainly to work at Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health Centers; Centers for sterilization and disinfection; departments for AIDS prophylaxis; sanitary quarantine and sanitary control centers; scientific-research centers; hygiene, epidemiology and microbiology institutes and laboratories; as epidemiologists at other medical and prophylactic institutions, as well as teachers of higher medical educational establishments and medical schools. 850 students undergo a course of study.

After 6 years of studies at the faculty of Preventive Medicine of BSMU the graduates work as interns at basic Centers of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Belarus, and having passed final examinations they can work in the following fields: General Hygiene; Hygiene of Children and Adolescents; Nutrition Hygiene; Professional Hygiene; Hygiene; Hygiene and Ecology; Epidemiology; Bacteriology; Parasitology; Valeology; Laboratory Investigations; Medical Statistics; work as scientific researchers and teachers of the disciplines mentioned. Students’ scientific circles function at all chairs, academic research activity of the students is carried on. The teaching staff of the faculty of Preventive Medicine take an active part in scientific research together with the Central Scientific Research Laboratory of BSMU, the Scientific Practical Center “Hygiene”, Scientific Research Institute of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology. Sharing of experience and mutual cooperation is established with the International Forum of Hospital Hygiene (Germany), the Chair of Nuclear Medicine at Bonn University, Scientific Research Institute of Hygiene and Prevention of diseases in children and adolescents at Health Ministry and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Russia), St-Petersburg Medical Academy named after I.M. Mechnikov (Russia), etc.
