Term of study at the Dental faculty – 5 years. 

The Dental faculty was set up in 1960.

Dentistry is a part of clinical medicine including the theory, practice and art of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of organs and tissues of the oral cavity and maxilla-facial area. The restorative dentistry includes treatment of teeth and mucus of the oral cavity. The dentists-orthopedists are competent in orthopedic correction of the dentition and occlusion as well as complex maxilla-facial prosthetics. Dentists-surgeons deal with surgery of the oral cavity, maxilla-facial surgeons – with operative treatment of multi-profile pathology of the maxilla-facial area (traumas, inflammatory processes, tumors),as well as reconstructive and plastic surgery of the face and neck. Orthodontists deal with apparatus methods of correcting abnormalities of occlusion.  

The prospects of the development of dentistry, as any other branch of medicine, are defined by three basic components: the level of doctor’s training, the quality of materials and technologies.

About 800 students study at the Dental faculty, including the citizens from near and far foreign countries. The whole period of study at the Dental faculty is 5 years. 9 profile Chairs conduct specialized teaching at the Faculty. The graduates of the Faculty are given the diploma of a dentist of general practice, and after appropriate specialization they can work as a dentist, orthopedist, orthodontist, pedodontist, dentist-surgeon, as well as maxilla-facial surgeon.

In 1996 the second birth of the Dental Faculty took place. The Faculty was the first among the higher medical educational establishments of the former USSR to pass on to a new curriculum approved by the Association of Dental Education at the World Health Organization (WHO). The distinction of the new curriculum was redistribution of the amount of academic hours in favor of teaching of stomatological disciplines.

Already from the first days of study at the University and during the first-second years the students learn stomatological materials, functional anatomy, laboratory techniques of manufacturing dental prostheses, master the technique of doctor’s manipulations on phantoms (simulators).

Beginning with the third year the students undergo training at clinical bases of the chairs of restorative dentistry, orthopedic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontia, surgical dentistry and maxilla-facial surgery, where under the guidance of experienced instructors they independently receive patients. 

Clinical bases of the Dental faculty are located at the Republican Dental Clinic, dental departments of city out-patient clinics и dental out-patient clinics of Minsk, Minsk City Hospital #11. For the last 10 years the material and technical supply of the faculty has been considerably improved and it gives a better opportunity to teach students modern techniques.

 

The heads and teaching staff of 9 chairs of the dental profile include 9 Doctors of Science (Medicine) and 108 Ph D (Medicine). The chairs accomplish training of highly qualified scientific-pedagogical personnel and much attention is devoted to scientific work of the students.

Alongside with special study of dental disciplines the students of the Dental faculty undergo medical-biological training adapted and oriented to the qualification characteristic of a dentist. For example, in 1998 the Faculty organized the chair of human anatomy that deals with integrated teaching of anatomy, histology, topographic anatomy and operative surgery on a special program for students-dentists. 

The students of the Faculty acquire also comprehensive training in general medical specialties of the therapeutic profile. It develops their broad medical thinking, understanding of the integrity of the human organism. 

The students’ life at the Dental faculty is manifold and interesting. In the process of studying at the University the students have the possibility to take an active part in scientific-research work of students’ scientific circles at theoretical and clinical chairs of the University, in scientific students’ conferences of various levels. The students with versatile interests may realize their talents in theatrical activities and sports sections of the University.
